He’s New Zealand’s own king of emo-grime and he’s releasing an EP called “In The Mouth Of Madness”. We had to throw him a party, and we had to throw it in Auckland. So Jay’s packing one of them big animal hats into his suit case next to fellow Christchurch rapper Rizz Kid and he’s heading north. Picking up Wellington’s genre-less turntablist Alphabethead on the way, they’ll be joining Auckland locals Caoimhe [Drab Doo Riffs], DMN, and Usual Suspects for a night of weird rap festivities.

Following up from his 2008 self-titled debut and last month’s “Judge Me Before You Know Me” mix-tape, Jay Roacher’s latest is a 6 track EP with guest appearances by label mate Tourettes and vocalist Caoimhe. The production is moody, the delivery is emotional, the catalyst is depression, and the result is good music. With a full length album out later in the year thru independent hip hop label Breakin Wreckwordz, In The Mouth Of Madness is a tantalizing appetizer.

Jay possesses all the traits you need to be a standout artist: drug addictions, dysfunctional relationships and a skewed perspective on life. What sets him apart is that he’s actually an excellent rapper. With a control of word play and imagery that puts most local poets to shame, Jay Roacher paints pictures of a mundane life only broken up with downers and dole payments. His music is honest and innovative, his live show is hype, and he wears animal hats. Aside from that he’s also a former NZ battle champion and a member of heavy smoking rap duo Cancer with Louie Knuxx.

A performer equally adept to rocking boisterous rock crowds as he is to intriguing audiences at jazz festivals – Alphabethead has been described as “a virtuoso of the phonograph turntable” and “an outrageous performer who you really must see to understand”. Once a champion hip hop DJ, Alphabethead is now an explorer and destroyer of all sound-on-vinyl. From Mongolian throat singing and heavy metal guitars to field recordings and electronica, no LP is taboo.

From ironic glee to geek faced braggadocio, positive rap duo Usual Suspects show case Saia and Sam’s maturity in music and mind (and spirit). Their trade mark sense of humour and quirk-hop beats remain intact but the music has developed beyond punch lines to include social commentary and a broader palette of ideas and experiences all of which come through in their recently released album Hire Learning.

          The hardest thing for me at this very moment is finding fitting words to use, so that I may refrain from cursing with a conviction otherwise only heard in the gangster rap songs he listens to, see: Christina Aguilera and ABBA‘s Dancing Queen. 

         When he was about five or six years old, maybe even 11, Sam’s parents and family were out for the day and he was left in the care of his aunty, who not surprisingly isn‘t a big fan of the little monkey either, see: ‘Ei, moeki’o, alu kapega lou poku. Koekiki o’u laku ga kalepe ma lou guku’ (which means, hey *young man* (actual translation omitted), go clean your room or my foots gonna have your arse for dinner) or ‘Samu, SAAAAMU, alu fufulu le toilet, a uma, sau loa e lomi o’u vae, KOPE’. (which means, Hey sam, go clean the toilet, or its my foot up your arse *or something to that effect). I applaud her old fashioned, hedonistic approach to raising children. She’s the type that knows only one way of raising children, her way. She’s the type that would show up to parent/teacher interviews with a fusipa’u in her purse, waiting for the teacher to say anything she thought was reason enough to give you a hiding then and there. Sue Bradford eat your heart out! 

          One day in his standard four year, Sam rushed home after school to show his aunty his report card. He was excited, because he received an ‘outstanding’ for all of his subjects, which was the highest achievement you could get. His excitement also intensified because he knew this would be his opportunity at some redemption. When he gave the report card to his aunty, he expected a look along the lines of guilt or remorse but the look he got was the complete opposite. He saw fury and rage in her eyes.

“Alu e aumai le fusipa’u” she said angrily

“What for? What’s wrong with my report?” Sam said, before he felt the warmth of her palm on his cheek.

“OOOOUUUCH“  the pain was instant.

“Shh, e ke alu ile aoga pe leai? Ahh?” she started asking

“What? Yes, course I do, what’s your problem?” he said

“Shh, aua e ke pepelo e, koekiki kogi oe ma le ree-mort ole kivi. E ke alu ile aoga pe leai?” she asked again

“YESSS, why?” he asked, almost breaking into tears

“Vaai I lou rebort, fai mai lou faiaoga e leai ma se mea eke faia, ga‘o lou KUKU I FAFO” she screamed

Sam thought for a second to himself about what she was saying and he let out a half a’amu, half relief laugh. ‘Tutu I fafo’ is Samoan, meaning to stand outside, she thought the ‘outstanding’ comment meant that sam just stood outside at school, see: fresh off the boat or English as a second language. 

     A few years later, Sam had been left again in the trusty care of his aunty. Knowing well and true that he couldn’t ride a bike, he thought he would be a valiant little Samoan and try his luck. Even after I gave him many cautionary warnings, see: “You know you can’t ride bikes for crap bro, You’re gonna crack that ugly face open” or “You’re gonna die you loser”. My very supportive efforts went on deaf ears as he still insisted on being a Samoan. 

         The little ai kae vale with selective hearing walked over to where the bike was. He had his back hunched so as not to be seen by his aunty, but even if she was paying attention, the big bush mop that inhabited his scalp would’ve easily given him away. I tried one more time to see if my words would get through, no luck. I tried to tell him the steep hill of the street they lived on would not be as forgiving as I have been, but he shared the same weird excitment that freshy Samoan boys get when they see palagi girls, see also: New Zealand born Samoan girls or any girl who‘s feet doesn’t look like Fred Flinstone‘s. Paying absolutely no attention to me, he jumped on the bike and let his curiosity get the best of him. Lacking the length in his legs to reach the pedals, he was sent speeding downhill. I closed my eyes for an instant and all I remember when I opened them was him lying at the bottom of the street looking worse than the boogeyman himself. 

          Luckily for him, his XXXL sized coconut head broke his fall. Nothing a little band-aid couldn’t fix, see also: stitches or corrective surgery. I learnt something that day though, as much as I want to show him the brighter side of my backhand, I love him just a little bit more than I hate him. I have doubts about the new challenges we’ll be facing in the new year but we’ll cross those bridges when we get a car, or is it ‘When we get to them’? Whatever.

so i escape…

this green screen heaven is REAL.

My judgement is still in a midnight slumber

not realising it’s just been betrayed

but then again, who ever does?

She runs her fingers through my hair

Then puts her hand/

in my hands,

and re-runs of fairytale endings

play on my broken VCR.
